Orthodontics & Functional Orthopedics in Mississauga

Gum disease doesn’t spring up overnight—it progresses slowly, and in many cases, you may not even realize you have it! Left untreated, gum disease can lead to larger issues, including tooth
loss. Gum disease can happen even if you are vigilant about flossing, brushing and taking care of your teeth, which is why it is so important to get routine dental check-ups.

Treatment Therapies

Though both are considered Orthodontics, Orthopedics is usually initiated earlier in an effort to assure more favorable facial growth and jaw structure. It is known that only 18-20% of malocclusion in children is genetic. This implies that the remaining 80% of poor bites arise due to environmental factors i.e., poor tongue position, mouth breathing, allergies, or enlarged tonsils and adenoids. As these influences act upon the developing lower face almost from birth it is important to try to and counteract these negative influences early and allow for more normal development. Well timed functional therapy can have an astounding influence on your child’s development often discouraging mouth breathing, poor sleep habits and a slow physical growth pattern. Functional orthopedics is usually therapy of short duration, may involve removable appliances and often makes more extensive therapy (braces) unnecessary.

Functional Orthopedics are a great way to help younger patients avoid many of the conditions that have plagued their parents, such as, poor sleep habits, T.M.J. pain, sleep apnea, small lower jaws (weak chin profile), and proud upper teeth (buck teeth) that my lead to poor self-image.

Orthodontics, more classically involves the use of braces that are bonded to the teeth. These braces allow us to control the teeth more accurately so that we can fine tune their relationship to one another and create that beautiful smile.

1. Curettage

Curettage is the name for the procedure where diseased soft tissue is removed from around the tooth. By removing the diseased tissue, we are removing a source of chronic infection and irritation and allowing proper healing to occur.

2. Root Planning

Root-planning is another aggressive gum disease treatment that involves removing and smoothing microscopic amounts of the tooth’s root surface. When this is complete, you are left
with a clean, bacteria-free surface that promotes optimal healing of the soft tissue surrounding it.

Who is this therapy for?

If your gum disease has progressed well below the gum line, we may recommend a consultation with a periodontist who specializes in gum disease-related surgery. For especially aggressive cases of gum disease, surgery may offer the best prognosis that allows for the gum and bone to fully heal.

How the Invisalign Procedure Works

Initially, we schedule your consultation appointment with an Invisalign-trained doctor. The orthodontist will examine your teeth thoroughly. This way we determine whether Invisalign is the appropriate treatment for your dental and oral health or not
Next, we check the current and detailed record of your teeth through X-rays that help craft a customized digital teeth model for your retainer. This impression of your teeth helps to conclude the movement of your teeth during treatment
Next, we will send your records directly to Invisalign to create a set of your custom Invisalign retainer or unique aligners. You have to change your retainers every 1 to 2 weeks, as prescribed by us. Trays must be worn for at minimum 22 hours a day or it will delay your treatment and results. However, they can be removed while eating or drinking as well as when brushing or flossing your teeth
The need for new retainers will vary with the present condition of your teeth. The treatment length will vary in accordance with each individual patient as well. Your teeth will gradually improve during your treatment plan until you reach your beautiful new smile.
